Passengers at Heathrow Airport Don’t Need to Remove This Item12/06/2019
UK’s busiest airport Heathrow airport announced installation of new computed tomography (CT) security equipment.
It will work similar to the CT scanner, which is currently used in hospitals to scan patients for clearer details.
Once deployed it will become more easier for passengers without removal of liquids and laptops from their bag. It will also cut additional queuing time at the airport.
The estimated costs for this project is around £50 million.
The Department for Transport is providing additional support to Heathrow authorities to install equipment across its terminal by 2022.
Once completed it will cut additional security checking like allocating liquid items in a plastic bag.
The new CT technology will provide much more clearer and better images of a luggage including hand-bags.
Heathrow Chief Operations Officer, Chris Garton, said:
“Heathrow has a proud history of investing in making every journey better and that’s why we’re delighted to be rolling out our new CT equipment. This cutting-edge kit will not only keep the airport safe with the latest technology, but will mean that our future passengers can keep their focus on getting on with their journeys and less time preparing for security screening.”
Heathrow airport is set to becoome the first airport in the UK, working with the Department for Transport to trial this technology. Which is expected to phase out other major airports in the UK.
Although this technology is new in UK airports, but it is widely used in USA.
Aviation Minster, Baroness Vere added:
“Passenger safety remains our top priority and this programme clearly shows the huge importance we place on security. This innovative new equipment will ensure Heathrow continues to provide a safe and smooth travel experience for passengers, as we look to roll out this new screening technology at airports across the country.”
However, you need to aware that using of this technology is not immediate yet and it will not available all terminals. Passengers are still required to remove their laptops and liquids from their bag for security purposes.
